ITPEC IP April 2023 Question 26
Which of the following is a service that provides disk space on a server connected to the Internet for storing files and allows users to read and write data from anywhere inside or outside their homes?
Explanation
Online storage — disk space on an Internet server, rented as a service, where files can be saved, read and written from anywhere.
The provider runs the servers; the user reaches the storage over the Internet from a PC or smartphone, at home or away. Files can be shared with others and synchronised across devices, and the provider handles the hardware. Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive are examples. It is one of the cloud services.
Answer (c)
Why not others:
- •(a) Archive — collecting files into one file, usually compressed (such as ZIP), or keeping data long-term; not a network service
- •(b) Authoring — creating multimedia content by combining text, images, sound and video with an authoring tool
- •(d) Flash memory — a rewritable semiconductor memory used in USB memory, SD cards and SSDs; a local storage medium, not a server
Key rule: A service delivered over the Internet (online storage, SaaS) is a cloud service; a storage medium such as flash memory is local hardware.
