How to ride a bicycle — tacit knowledge is know-how gained through experience that is hard to put into words.

Knowledge management distinguishes explicit knowledge, which can be written down in documents, lists and manuals and passed on by reading, from tacit knowledge, which lives in a person's experience, intuition and physical skill. Riding a bicycle is learned by practising balance, and no written description lets someone ride without that practice. Organisations try to turn tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge (externalisation in the SECI model) so that it can be shared.
